As well as our purebred Charolais and Senepol cattle operations, We are currently artificially inseminating the best performing pedigree Red Angus females in our herd to Senepol and other adapted bos taurus sires to create an unbeatable first cross base for our composites. The Senegus is the compilation of two of the world’s leading market holders for productivity & sustainability within the beef industry, those being the British breed Red Angus & the tropical Bos Taurus Senepol, this crossbreeding captures the very best of characteristics in each breed and inevitably helping to cross the barrier in breed limitations. The main advantage with Senegus is the gaining of hybrid vigour which highlights the crosses production potential within the Australian market, where physical and economic losses would render the survival of pure Red Angus in the tropics, particularly in moist regions, not viable.
What we like about the Senegus bulls are that they are adaptable and have great survival and expansion capabilities. Thus, they are an excellent crossbreeding bull alternative to be used in commercial producers herds. *Each year Cobrabald offer Senegus bulls for private sale and a selection will be available at our annual Bull Sale. * Senegus heifers are also available yearly by request.
**A small number of Senepol/ Brahman bulls are bred, should you be interested in this composite please contact us as we may be able to accommodate your request.
Senelais
In 2006 using the very best of the Charolais females within our herd Cobrabald trialled a cross that would combine the traits of the Charolais and the tropically adapted bos taurus Senepol in the development of composites with superior levels of milk and beef production ability, that would meet the expectations of breeders looking for a platform to use over Brahman, Droughtmaster and other tropically adapted breeds. The advantage of using this composite gives the flexibility to finish off cattle on a wider range of conditions, that pure breds may not have been able to achieve on their own, allowing producers to match their cattle and the market.
The 50% Charolais %50 Senepol combination has worked successfully in the northern regions of Australia where the traits of the breeds has surpassed breeders expectations. With such positive feedback and recommendations from producers on this composite, it saw the introduction and ultimately the foundation of using the Senepol and Senelais infused cattle, within our breeding programmes. Popularity of this composite has led to us breeding bulls each year to sell privately, at annual field days and at our annual bull sale.
